What To Look For When Hiring Movers in Ottawa
I’ve learnt from experience that there are good and bad moves. I have to say that one of the best investments in relocating is hiring a moving company with a great reputation. You can rest assured your items will be taken care of and save your back leaving it to the pros!
The way we move has changed a little since COVID, but regardless, these tips are a good place to start!
1. Ask friends and family for references
Chances are at least some of your friends or family have used a moving company in the past, but if not, you can always turn to your realtor who can make a suggestion. With more and more happening online, you can also go to a local virtual group to ask for ideas there, too!
2. Look for reviews
Visiting the Better Business Bureau is a good place to start. Here, you’ll see a rating that reflects the company’s standing and you can read reviews left by past customers. But remember that not all companies will be listed here, and that’s not necessarily a red flag - the BBB is an organization companies buy into and it’s not mandatory.
Otherwise, head to Google Reviews or Yelp. It’s helpful to know what others are saying about their experience.
3. Get clear on the services you need
There’s a lot that goes into estimates from the size of your house or apartment (number of rooms) to the amount (and types) of items/boxes. Most local moves estimates are based on the number of movers, truck size, and duration. If you’re moving long-distance, oftentimes, estimates are by weight and distance.
Remember if you need a hand to pack, we can help!
4. Don’t be afraid to ask questions
Information is power. The more you know will help you make an educated decision! Not sure what to ask? Consider these questions:
How long has your company been in business?
Are you licensed?
What kind of insurance do you offer?
What type of deposits do you need?
What is your cancellation policy?
What is your policy on specialty items?
What will happen if any of my items get broken or go missing?
How do you handle disputes and complaints?
5. Get a few quotes
Once you’ve narrowed it down, get in touch with two or three to get a couple estimates, but remember you have to compare apples to apples - Not all estimates are created equally. Factor in their reputation, cost, and your gut feeling.
6. Look for Red-Flags
Sadly, there are always going to be a few thorns out there so be cautious of red flags to avoid disappointment, such as:
Too-good-to-be-true estimates
Unlicensed or uninsured
Empty Moving Contract
7. Be Ready
When the movers arrive, they should more or less be able to go to any room to start. Of course, there may be some last minute packing, but ideally your boxes will be packed, labeled with their destined room, and indicate any fragile contents. On the day of, someone should be there to answer any questions the movers may have.
