How to Organize your Closet for the Fall
Fall is one of my favourite times of year: the temperatures are cooler means cozy sweaters! It’s the perfect time to tackle your fall closet organization project.
Setting up your closet now will make mornings easier. It’s also a great opportunity to declutter. Let’s get you started to simplify the process.
Step 1.
Don’t glare over, this is a step not to be skipped, we promise.
Take your items out and empty your drawers. Closets are often forgotten in the cleaning schedule because let’s face it they are often “out of sight, out of mind.”
With everything out, grab a cloth and wipe things down and sweep the floors.
Step 2.
Now that your closet is empty, start thinking about what tools might be helpful.
Think about accessories that will keep you organized like bins or vertical hangers. If you lack space, this will be particularly helpful.
As you go through your clothing, things will become obvious. Make a list of what you’d like to improve and do your research on what types of effective closet organization products are available.
Step 3.
If there’s anything that needs to be washed, dry cleaned, or repaired, now’s a good time to do it
Doing this will make sure that it’ll be fresh and ready come next spring.
If your closet is big enough for the clothes for all seasons, tuck the summer clothes in a corner so that your morning routine is simplified.
Not big enough? Bins and chests are great to keep your clothes in good shape. Remember not to overpack your storage containers. Leave a little room inside for air to circulate, which allows your clothes to breathe.
Step 4.
This is the time to decide what will go back into the closet.
Consider both your incoming fall clothes and your outgoing summer clothes. Dedicate some areas in your room for: Keep, Donate, Trash, Next season. Maybe it no longer fits or maybe it doesn’t give you that good feeling anymore.
For the items you’ll want to store for next year, set them aside and store them in a bin or chest.
Step 5.
Save yourself headaches and create a system now. In an ideal world you’d:
Fold: pajamas, athletic wear, undergarments
Hang: jackets, coats, blazers, blouses, trousers, dresses
Fold or Hang (based on preference & space): shirts, shorts, jeans, light knit sweaters, scarves, belts
In your closet and drawers, keep items together by group and then colour to make pulling a wardrobe together that much easier.
Step 6.
Bid adieu to your flip flops and light jackets and welcome your booties and fall jackets.
As we progress into the fall, it will only get cooler so it’s a good time to bring out light scarves and thin gloves too. We recommend throwing these in the wash to refresh them
Step 7.
There’s no shame in getting a helping hand with your fall closet organization project.
Taking inventory of your clothing and decluttering where necessary will make your fall and winter easier to navigate when it comes to your wardrobe.
