Packing for Ottawa area road trips

With things starting to look a little more normal again, we’re excited to (safely) move about. Campsites are open once again and maybe you’re thinking of hitting the road for some summer fun.

We’ve got a few small trips planned of our own, mostly cottage days but no matter how far you’re going or for how long, we’ve got some basics to make sure your getaway is smooth and enjoyable.

Check the weather at your destination

I’ve made the mistake before where I assumed the weather at my destination would be the same as my hometown and let me tell you, I was cold. Checking ahead means you’ll bring the right clothes and not be left to the whim of mother nature.

Consider your activities

The things you need to spend a week camping are going to be very different things than if you are staying in a bed & breakfast. Go through the kinds of activities you’re planning on and what you’ll need to make sure you’re comfortable. Do you need towels? Hiking shoes?  Something a little more dressy?

Think snacks and water

Bringing a reusable water bottle will cut down on costs and make it easy to stay hydrated throughout the adventure. A road trip would not be complete without snacks either so consider picking up a few things ahead like trail mix and granola bars or make some energy balls.

Charge up the electronics

Whether you’re going off the grid or staying in town, you’ll want to make sure you’ve packed the necessary charging cables to get you through. We found a really great multi-purpose charger that not only charges phones but it also doubles as a car booster if we ever run into trouble.

Catch up on podcasts and books

It’s hard to get uninterrupted time and sometimes getting away is what you need to do just that. Driving any distance? Discover some new podcasts: We’re loving the Under the Influence and the Serial Napper (if you prefer true crime!) both created by Canadians.

Streamline outfits

To make the most of the space I have in my bags, I pick coordinating pieces for multiple uses that work well with each other to mix and match. Bringing items that can be layered (like a tank top, hoodie, and jacket) gives you more flexibility when the weather changes.

Use packing cubes

To help keep things organized, we love using packing cubes to keep all your items where they should be.  Pack by day or activity or use it to keep your t-shirts with other tees and socks with socks.

Masks

Masks have come a long way in their designs giving you options, but remember to bring an extra mask or two with you just in case. Keeping unused masks in a sealed bag will help reduce getting them dirty between wears.

Sanitizer

Perhaps one of the most recognizable scents, the hand sanitizer industry has taken off and gives you size options to make it easier. We recommend keeping a larger bottle in the car and finding a travel-sized option for the day-trips that you can pop in a bag.

Sanitizing wipes

COVID aside, having sanitizing wipes can make your life easier if you’re camping or flying. You might find yourself in a situation where access to soap and water is just not possible and you need to give that surface a wipe down.
