Organizing Backyard Celebrations

Now that we’re officially into summer and some of the COVID restrictions are being loosened, we’re eager to get outside and celebrate!

Above all else, we would like to recognize that Ottawa is located on the traditional unceded territory of the Algonquin Anishnaabeg People. The Algonquin peoples have lived on this land since time immemorial. We are grateful to explore, play, and gather in this territory.

If you remember, we talked about creating a backyard oasis and now is the time to take advantage of it. We’ve got a few tips to help you create a summer of delights.

Have a backyard date

Put the kids to bed early and sneak outside for a glass of vino, just the two of you! Twinkling stars and candles can instantly transform your outside space.

Organizing Backyard Celebrations

If you’re anything like me, food is at the heart of all celebrations. Think about items you can make ahead of time so you can enjoy the company rather than feel rushed or pressured in the kitchen.

… Or have a potluck

I’ve always thought it would be fun to pick a theme (or ingredient) and have everyone contribute something towards the meal. It means less pressure on you and your guests will feel like they helped create the vibe.

No backyard celebration is complete without a few cocktails. Whether they are for adults or kids, there’s something about that slushy drink that makes you feel like you’re on vacation.

Play a game or two

There are many games out there that lend themselves to a small group of people. We’re big fans of Cards Against Humanity (or Apples to Apples with the littler ones), the app Heads Up, or hey, grab a pack of cards and play a game of Crazy 8s!

Just because we can start to gather in small groups, some of us may not be able to join. Consider extending the invitation via video chat and make them feel like they’re part of the group get-together, too.

Don’t get too carried away

We get it, it’s been a while, but remember that this long-overdue celebration doesn’t have to be the biggest one. It can be tempting to pull out all the stops, but start small. Remember: we’ve gone from talking to birds for company to being able to be within arms reach of our loved ones. Baby steps, friends!

We can’t wait to see what the summer has in store and see friends and family!
